Under the guidance of the Patient Capacity Management Center (PCMC) Leadership, to include Central Patient Placement and Transfer Center (CPP/TC) RN leads and supervises a team, ensuring efficient and safe patient placement and flow within the UCSF Medical Center Health System. This role involves collaboration with various healthcare professionals and departments to manage patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, while maintaining a positive patient experience and high-quality care standards.


  • Actively manages inpatient unit staffing levels; ensuring staff coverage is appropriate to each departments' current needs.
  • Assumes responsibility for the unit in areas delegated and in the absence of the Unit Director

  • Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team and acts as a resource to assist nurses in adhering to established nursing procedures

  • Performs other duties as assigned/required.

  • Functions as a leader of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams, facilitates the critical thinking of staff in carrying out established nursing procedures and addresses patient care issues.
  • Accountable to Clinical Operations and Patient Placement Director for overall work performance
  • Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act
  • Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors.

  • Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and materiel resources.
  • Be accountable for the clinical management and administrative coordination of nursing resources and patient flow that assures the efficiency of medical center operations.
  • Actively rounds to assess overall unit level management and supports patient satisfaction and nursing quality measures.
  • Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with the department/unit and must meet organizational/departmental targets.
  • Ensures quality patient care and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice.
  • Understands unit financial goals and educates staff of cost-containment strategies. Maintains unit expenses within budget.

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years recent full-time acute care, critical care or emergency RN experience
  • Previous Supervisory/Lead Experience
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and

    multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.

  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems,

    determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels

    of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project

    proposals.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.

  • Experience with Epic/Apex
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor,

  • evaluate, and document human resources matters and performance, and to provide input to decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems

    used in nursing units or departments.

  • Master's Degree preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of California
  • Current American Heart Association BLS
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS

Salary Information


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
