The Office for Faculty Excellence ( OFE) is a unit within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. The Provost is the chief academic officer under the Chancellor and is responsible for review and approval of all academic programs and policies, and the appointment, promotion, and compensation of the faculty. OFE supports faculty development and leadership development programming for faculty at all stages of their careers.

Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Vice Provost advises senior leadership on faculty development, engagement, and retention, and aligns institutional efforts with emerging trends and best practices at peer R1 institutions. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Excellence, you will directly support faculty success at NC State University. Additionally, you will work collaboratively across colleges and administrative units to design, implement, and assess initiatives that support faculty across the full career lifecycle.

The Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development will primarily:

  • Develop and implement faculty development programs and initiatives for all faculty tracks and career stages.
  • Supervise the Director of Faculty Development and assist with the programming of the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, providing leadership, support, and strategic alignment with OFE's broader faculty development mission
  • Serve as the primary OFE leadership contact for the Campus Writing and Speaking Program
  • Manage special projects and other relevant duties as assigned by the Senior Vice Provost.


Other key responsibilities will fall within the following 4 core functions.
Mentoring and Faculty Learning Communities:

  • Design, implement, and scale evidence-based mentoring ecosystems that support faculty across career stages
  • Align mentoring initiatives with institutional goals for retention, advancement, and faculty satisfaction
  • Develop and coordinate faculty learning communities and communities of practice that connect shared scholarly, pedagogical, and professional interests


Faculty Development and Success :

  • Lead a comprehensive, lifecycle-based approach to faculty success
  • Work with the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Policy to develop resources for faculty success plans and performance development plans
  • Develop and implement a robust evaluation strategy that not only will assist with assessing results of individual programs, but will support NC State University in an ongoing assessment of the complement of faculty programs being offered
  • Design, administer, and track confidential, supportive programs for faculty who would benefit from individualized development plans or performance coaching
  • Support early-career faculty with professional development related to teaching
  • Offer and track faculty development-related consultations with faculty
  • Develop resources and training for academic leaders on supporting faculty through performance challenges
  • Lead the development of individualized career mapping resources and programming that support faculty in navigating promotion, tenure, post-tenure review, and career stages (early, mid, late career)
  • Coordinate with relevant OFE staff and university offices to ensure faculty have access to clear, stage-appropriate guidance throughout their careers

Work/Life Balance and Faculty Wellness :

  • Develop and implement OFE's faculty wellness and work/life balance initiatives, including programming, resources, and partnerships with campus wellness units
  • Develop, implement and evaluate faculty wellness programs and convene the Faculty Wellness Committee
  • Serve as a university-level advocate for policies and practices that support sustainable, humane faculty careers
  • Develop and promote resources that address burnout, stress, and the integration of personal and professional responsibilities
  • Lead OFE's efforts to support faculty continuity during periods of personal or professional disruption, including illness, family caregiving, bereavement, or other life circumstances
  • Develop proactive programming and communication to ensure faculty are aware of and can access continuity resources before a crisis arises


External Engagement and National Leadership :

  • Represent NC State in national conversations and networks related to faculty development and success
  • Benchmark institutional practices against peer and aspirational R1 institutions
  • Pursue external funding and partnerships to support faculty initiatives
  • Contribute to the national visibility and thought leadership of NC State in faculty development

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Doctorate degree
  • Demonstrated experience in faculty development, academic administration, or a closely related area within higher education
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a college or university setting
  • Strong record of designing, implementing, and assessing programs that support faculty success and well-being
