Hexcel is currently seeking a R&D Test Technician I for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

  • Autonomously performing technical work to support engineers developing the next generation of advanced materials for the aerospace and space and defense markets in a state-of-the-art laboratory with research and development equipment in an industrial setting
  • Set up equipment and perform testing or analysis, following standard test procedures to assure safe practice and valid results. Problem solving of minor issues with recognized tools.
  • Collect data utilizing various measurement devices such as balances, scales, calipers, and universal test machines.
  • Perform calculations as necessary, prepare reports of test data and results in accordance with specified procedures.
  • Communicate data/findings/problems to small groups within own R&D function by verbal or written communication.
  • Document and recognize observations and discrepancies in data and/or outputs on familiar equipment.
  • Maintaining departmental files, logs, and records of past experiments and/or tests for future references.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe working environment, ensuringlab equipmentis inacceptable order.
  • Participate in small EHS or 5S team efforts, act as calibration or maintenance officers, or other safety/maintenance efforts.
  • Candidate is expected to be able to work independently and with a high attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • High School Degree or equivalent
  • College courses or post-high school training preferred; candidates with an associate's degree and or experience with composites, fiber, honeycomb, plastics, and ceramics test techniques and material properties is desirable, especially for aerospace applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve equipment and processes and learn new processes and procedures.
  • Ability to understand engineering requirements, safety requirements, standard operating procedures, and maintenance instructions.
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to manipulate data according to algebraic methods. Ability to handle unit conversion. Basic understanding of statistical principles of mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.
  • Competent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and ability to use team collaboration software (Microsoft Teams, SharePoint).
  • Work well with others in a team environment, with dedication, integrity, initiative and self-motivation.
  • Familiarity with Instron, Shimadzu, or equivalent universal test frames preferred
