The OR Equipment Technician, under the direction of the Registered Nurse, will participate as an integral member of the patient care team. They are responsible for various support functions, including equipment management, patient transportation, and effective communication with the healthcare team. The OR Equipment Technician performs multiple support functions directed toward improved efficiencies in the OR and positive patient care outcomes. This position requires a collaborative and proactive approach to ensure a smooth and efficient surgical process.
| Duties and Essential Job Functions: |
- Demonstrates the ability to read and understand Caseview and Apex (Preference cards).
|
- Consistently completes daily assignments and Readylist reports.
|
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the functioning of all service specific Entry Level equipment (Refer to Entry Level Competency Packet).
|
- Assists the circulator and/or Physician at the start of cases positioning the patient and getting the room ready.
- Responsible for changing tanks as needed.
|

- Documents any equipment malfunctions in writing by completing a red tag and by creating an online service ticket. Remove equipment from service and take equipment to the Clinical Engineering office to get serviced.
|
- Responds efficiently and effectively to all Surgeon/Nursing request for supplies and equipment and consults a supervisor if unsure about requests.
|
- Responsible for training new employees (On Entry Level Equipment).
|
- Acts as a liaison with all Perioperative Groups including: PACU/Pre-op, IT, Clinical Engineering, Radiology, Endoscopy, Cardiology, IR and Pharmacy.
|
- Ensures essential equipment and supplies are brought into the OR using appropriate infection control standards. (Wipe down equipment before bringing into an OR and Wipe down equipment before returning equipment to the equipment room.
|
- Transports specimens from the OR to the appropriate laboratory in a timely manner (By hand or by use of TUG) and follows Specimen Labeling and Identification Policy 6.04.14
|
- Transports patients to and from the OR, protecting the patient from injury during transport.
|
- Utilizes appropriate aseptic technique when restocking supplies and when moving equipment in and out of the operating rooms.
|
- Maintains order of equipment and gurneys in the hallway by keeping passageways clear and by not blocking O2 shutdown valves and fire extinguishers.
|
- Organizes and maintains equipment rooms.
|
- Assists with lifting and positioning patients before, during, and after surgery. (Responds to moving help requests).
|
- Assists with hanging and maintaining racks of Lead
|
- Maintains a clean, safe and functional work environment
|
- Interpersonal Skills and Communication:
|
- Maintains patient safety and privacy at all times.
|
- Responds to email messages in a timely manner.
|
- Turns on Voalte phone and puts name in assigned rooms at the start of shift (15 minutes after the hour).
|
- Treats patients, visitors, and health team members with respect and dignity.
|
- Carries out assignments as directed.
|
- Demonstrates a cooperative and team-oriented approach.
|
- Communicates positive and caring attitude towards unit, hospital staff, patients and visitors.
|
- Fosters cooperative effort in meeting goals of unit.
|
- Communicates status of work responsibilities for breaks, lunches and change of shift using a verbal or written format.
|
- Utilizes unit communication systems such as staff meetings, minutes, and communication book.
|
- Applies concepts of effective communication.
|
- Incorporates UCSF Medical Center mission statement philosophy into daily work.

- III. Accountability
|
- Maintains knowledge of and adheres to UCSF and Department policies and procedures.
|
- Completes all Learning Center modules by due dates.
|
Maintains employee health requirements.
|
- Participates in routine evaluation process (Fills out Self- Evaluation section and returns to management within a week).
|
Follows guidelines on use of sick leave.
|
- Starts work at scheduled time, clocks in and out, complies with break and lunch guidelines and completes work on time.
|
- Checks and completes time sheet at end of Pay Period. (Mistakes on time sheet must be reported before the close of the Pay Period)

- Complies with dress code including appropriate identification.
|
- Maintains house and telephone standards established by UCSF and Department.
|
- Uses principles of proper body mechanics and body alignment when moving equipment and/or patients.
|
- Maintains flexibility in relation to room assignment, work assignment and shift schedule.
|
- Recognizes situations requiring supervision and seeks appropriate resources.
|
- Organizes and prioritizes tasks and assignments considering department needs.
|
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
High school graduate Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. Basic mathematical skills to quickly and accurately add, subtract, divide, and multiply whole numbers and decimals manually or using a calculator Ability to work independently with good organizational skills. Ability to work within a team. Must possess good communication skills. Ability to think critically and proactively to support the OR team. Ability to prioritize and multi-task to support multiple Surgeons and staff. Ability to work in a fast-paced complex environment. Must be able to see well and read in dim light. Must have manual dexterity to manipulate small equipment including, but not limited to, twisting bulbs, turning dials, changing batteries, and pushing buttons. Must be able to move in confined spaces. Must be able to repetitively lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description. - Willingness to be taught/learn new skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of operating room or patient care setting experience
