Title: Diesel Mechanic

Reports To: Service Manager/Shop Foreman

Pay Rate: $30.00 - $44.00 / Hourly

Position Overview:

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining motorcoaches, transit buses, and other commercial vehicles. This role performs a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and fuel system repairs while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards, manufacturer specifications, and regulatory requirements.


The Diesel Mechanic serves as a technical resource within the shop, utilizing diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and industry best practices to troubleshoot and resolve vehicle concerns. This position may also perform road calls and field service repairs at customer locations, requiring the ability to work independently while delivering exceptional service and support.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain motorcoaches, transit buses, commercial vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of diesel engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, HVAC systems, and other vehicle components.
  • Diagnose and repair compressed natural gas (CNG) systems and related engine components, where applicable.
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, service bulletins, and manufacturer resources to identify and resolve vehicle issues.
  • Adhere to Cummins warranty processes and procedures, including proper documentation and submission requirements.
  • Interpret and apply technical manuals, wiring diagrams, service information, and repair guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate repair documentation, service records, and work order information.
  • Perform road calls and field service repairs as needed, including travel to customer locations to diagnose and complete repairs on-site.
  • Maintain a valid DOT Medical Card and safely operate company vehicles when required.
  • Understand and adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including EPA, OSHA, and DOT requirements.
  • Continuously develop technical knowledge and skills through training and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:


  • Previous diesel engine repair experience required.
  • Experience working on motorcoaches, transit buses, heavy-duty trucks, or commercial vehicles preferred.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing CNG-powered vehicles strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, and vehicle diagnostics.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service documentation.
  • Previous experience with body and frame repairs preferred.
  • Experience with interior component repair and replacement preferred.
  • Audio/Video system troubleshooting experience is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, manage workload, and complete assignments within established timeframes.
  • Must possess the tools necessary to perform assigned job duties.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL and DOT Medical Card preferred.

  • Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and commercial vehicles.
