What to Expect
The R&D and Facilities Infrastructure team is seeking a driven and highly motivated Controls Engineer to join a team responsible for delivering and sustaining control systems across Tesla's manufacturing and energy facilities. This role requires proven competency across the full controls engineering lifecycle, from SCADA integration and control system design through PLC programming, HMI development, factory acceptance testing, site commissioning, and long-term sustaining operations. You will work closely with process design teams, construction and commissioning teams, facilities engineers, and equipment vendors to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable control system solutions.
What You'll Do
- Lead the control system architecture design including the integration of HMI, SCADA, PLC, VFDs, safety PLCs, and 3rd party packaged equipment
- Design, develop, and maintain Ignition SCADA projects including screen/HMI development, dashboards, and alarm management interfaces using Perspective and Vision modules
- Work closely with the process design teams, controls engineers, facilities teams, and vendors to develop process control narratives, define integration requirements, and ensure systems operate safely and reliably
- Implement and manage continuous process optimization, minimizing unplanned downtime, and centralizing plant performance monitoring
- Integrate 3rd party packaged equipment and power monitoring systems into Ignition via OPC-UA, Modbus TCP, BACnet, EtherNet/IP, and other industrial protocols
- Develop and maintain MySQL database connections, stored procedures, and queries within Ignition for data logging, reporting, and historian functions
- Create API calls within Ignition scripting (Python/Jython) to interface with third-party platforms and enterprise systems
- Design and manage Ignition tag databases including UDTs, expression tags, and derived tags.Write Python/Jython scripts for gateway events, client events, and scheduled tasks
- Available to travel for FAT, site acceptance testing, equipment installation, and commissioning
- Maintain thorough documentation of system architecture, integration points, tag naming conventions, and screen standards. Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve SCADA system issues in a timely manner to minimize production impact and provide on-call support as needed
What You'll Bring
- 5+ years hands-on experience with Ignition SCADA (versions 7.9 and newer), including Perspective, Vision, and Gateway configuration
- Demonstrated experience supporting a 24/7 production or manufacturing facility
- Experience working with modern communication protocols: OPC-UA, Modbus TCP, BACnet, Profinet, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP
- Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging technical problems
- Demonstrated experience in the execution of integration projects from concept development through commissioning, ramp-up, and long-term operations
- Inductive Automation Core or Gold certification preferred
- Proficiency in MySQL including writing queries, stored procedures, and managing database connections within Ignition
- Strong Python/Jython scripting skills within the Ignition environment, including API development and web service integration
- Understanding of industrial networking, VLANs, and firewall considerations for SCADA environments
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or equivalent) with demonstrated competency across the full controls stack

Expected Compensation
$84,000 - $210,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
