Job Summary

Manage quality and lab functions for the manufacturing of pet food consumer products.The Quality Manager is an essential position toensurefood safety and quality standards for all product manufactured at the facility.Food safety training, attention to detail, exceptional work ethic, willingness to adapt, and a positive attitude are essential to success in this role.Champion continuous improvement efforts and defect reduction initiatives to establish an effective Quality Management System (QMS); initiate and implement Quality improvement activities as appropriate to ensure and maintain a Continuous Improvement Culture.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate and enforce safe work practices at all times to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Serve as the Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) and ensure compliance with FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), animal food regulations, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Champion a strong food safety culture and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
  • Lead and oversee sanitation programs, environmental monitoring activities, and contamination prevention efforts.
  • Ensure sanitation procedures effectively mitigate contamination and cross-contact risks.
  • Manage contracted pest control providers and verify the effectiveness of the facility's pest management program.
  • Maintain food safety, quality, and regulatory records to ensure audit and compliance readiness.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate site-specific food safety, quality, contamination, and cross-contact risks.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve quality systems and processes within the manufacturing environment.
  • Partner with facility leadership and cross-functional Spectrum Brands teams to meet or exceed product quality standards.
  • Lead root cause analyses, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives to resolve quality and process issues.
  • Manage and maintain Statistical Process Control (SPC) systems and related quality data collection processes, where applicable.
  • Own and continuously improve the facility Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Support product and process development projects by representing Quality Assurance and customer requirements during design and implementation activities.
  • Develop, implement, document, and maintain procedures for process control, testing, inspection, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor product performance and reliability metrics, ensuring timely identification and resolution of negative quality trends.
  • Develop, analyze, and communicate key quality performance indicators (KPIs) to facility leadership.
  • Lead, coach, and develop Quality Department personnel to ensure department effectiveness and engagement.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory safety programs and ensure compliance with all applicable safety requirements.
  • Manage calibration programs and quality support for plant and laboratory measurement devices, including scales, metal detectors, and other critical equipment.
  • Drive continuous improvement of quality systems, programs, and operational processes.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues related to raw materials, components, processes, and finished products.
  • Lead customer quality interactions to identify improvement opportunities and facilitate communication between customers, manufacturing, and product development teams.
  • Support product safety investigations and adverse consumer complaint resolution through timely investigation and closure.
  • Develop and manage departmental operating budgets and monitor spending against financial targets.
  • Establish and maintain cost-reduction initiatives that deliver measurable operational and quality improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable USDA, FDA, GFSI, CPSC, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Plan and conduct internal audits and drive corrective actions resulting from audit findings.

Education and Experience Profile

  • Bachelor's Degree in a science related field
  • 10+years of experience in Quality management of consumer productsor an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Knowledgeable in Quality Management, Quality Inspection and Calibration standards such as ISO 9001, ANSI Z1.4, NIST
  • Knowledgeable in QC inspection and sampling systems
  • Knowledgeable in Food Safety and HACCP

Required Skills

  • Food safety training (PCQI, HACCP, SQF Practitioner)
  • Experience managing FDA inspections and customer audits
  • Generalproblem-solvingability
  • Leadership on initiating resolutions for major quality issues
  • Excellent communication skills and strong management skills
  • SAP experience (preferred)
  • Strong computer skills including Quality control applications, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Experience in Project Management, 5S, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing is beneficial

Work Environment

  • 25% Office and 75% Manufacturing environment
  • Exposure to shop environment such as noise, dust, odors and fumes.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach and move about facilities.

Spectrum Brandsrecognizes that a successful food safety culture can be achieved only by following safe working practices and procedures developed through effective hazard analysis, training, and experience.In order to achieve these aims, a robust Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points System (HACCP) has been introduced following a full hazard analysis of all food related operations. All instructions and control mechanisms within HACCP are designed to control any risk to food safety.Achievement of this policy involves all staff being individually responsible for the quality of their work. The result will be a culture of continual improvement and an improved working environment for all.All employees are provided with the food safety training necessary to enable them to perform their tasks and are responsible for ensuring that they do so in a hygienic manner so that the safety of our product is not put at risk. All employees are required to co-operate with any authorized person to ensure that all policies, procedures, and work instructions are properly complied with.
