Speech-Language Pathology Faculty

Widener University is seeking a 10month, tenuretrack faculty position within the Institute for Speech-Language Pathology. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interprofessional academic community and contribute to the growth of a forwardthinking program committed to excellence in teaching, clinical education, research, and service. Candidates must hold an academic or research doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Communication Sciences and Disorders, or a related discipline; possess ASHA Certification in Speech-Language Pathology (CCCSLP); be eligible for Pennsylvania SLP licensure; and demonstrate a minimum of three years of clinical, teaching, and research experience in higher education.

Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in pediatric and/or schoolaged communication disorders, bilingual speech and language development, or bilingual assessment and intervention practices with pediatric and/or schoolaged populations.

The Speech-Language Pathology Faculty for the Institute for Speech-Language Pathology in the College of Health & Human Services is a fulltime, 10month, tenuretrack faculty position involved in a combination of teaching, research/scholarly activity, clinical supervision, and service to the institution and profession. This academic-year role generally focuses on educating graduate students, maintaining an active research agenda, and ensuring compliance with ASHA accreditation standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential Duties:

Teaching

• Develop and teach courses in the SLP Program as negotiated with the Director.
• Ensure courses and syllabi are current and available to all students.
• Demonstrate competency in teaching as evidenced by supervisor, peer, and student evaluations.
• Demonstration of expertise in areas of teaching responsibility and content delivery method.
• Participate in team and/or interdisciplinary teaching.
• Participate in curriculum development.
• Use faculty development opportunities and teacher effectiveness tools to improve teaching.
• Supervise students on special projects (e.g. interprofessional, research projects).
• Maintain regular office hours, guide or support students who reach out for assistance, and identify students who are struggling and need extra attention or support to be successful through use of email, phone or other appropriate means of communication.

Clinical Education

• Supervision of student clinical education in the SLP Clinic and affiliated interprofessional pro bono Chester Community Clinic.

Scholarship/Practice

• Conduct and disseminate applied research.
• Engage in scholarly/clinical work related to area of interest on a regular basis and as required by expectations of the Program.
• Maintain currency of clinical and professional knowledge through regular continuing education.

Service

• Attend all university academic events as required in the faculty handbook.
• Attend all University, College, and Program faculty meetings.
• Participate in student recruitment and admission activities.
• Engage with students via co-curricular activities.
• Serve as an academic advisor and/or mentor for students and/or student organizations.
• Assist in the accreditation process including preparation of documents for accreditation applications, annual reviews, and site visits.
• Demonstrate the ability to support the mission of Widener University as evidenced by teaching and clinical assignments, advising, and mentoring of students.
• Participate in professional activities and service to the University, College, community, and the profession.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

• An academic/research doctorate (PhD, EdD) in Speech-Language Pathology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Certification in Speech-Language Pathology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CCC-SLP).
• Licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or eligibility to apply, in Speech-Language Pathology.
• Minimum 5 years clinical experience in speech-language pathology.
• Minimum 3 years clinical, teaching, and research experience in an institution of higher education.
• In-depth knowledge of at least one area of SLP practice and scientific knowledge base.
• Knowledge of education and health care system structures relative to SLP.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and written and oral communication abilities.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Knowledge of content delivery methods including web-supported classes (e.g., Canvas) and distance learning.
• Experience networking with various academic disciplines to promote interprofessional education and practice among faculty and students.

Preferred:

• 5 + years clinical, teaching, and research experience in an institution of higher education.
• 7 + years clinical experience in speech-language pathology.
• Experience with bilingual or multilingual clinical service delivery.
• Active participation in local, regional, national, or international SLP organizations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

• Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout classrooms and campus spaces for extended periods.
• Capacity to lift and transport instructional materials or supplies weighing up to 20 lbs.
• Availability to support students by phone, email, or other communication channels during evenings and weekends as needed.
