Faculty Positions in Biomedical Engineering

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING (BME)

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. One position targets candidates working in regenerative engineering, including biomaterials, cell engineering, and tissue engineering. The second position targets candidates working in computational biomechanics, particularly at the interface of rehabilitation, neural engineering, and artificial intelligence, with applications to neural and musculoskeletal systems. The successful candidate for the computational biomechanics position may have the opportunity to hold an approximately 20% appointment in the Feinberg School of Medicine.

These two areas are the primary priorities for the current search; however, outstanding candidates across the broader field of biomedical engineering are also encouraged to apply.

About the Opportunity

We seek candidates who can contribute to the dynamic, collaborative community in our department. The successful candidate is expected to develop a robust, independently-funded research program and to become a recognized leader in their field. Candidates should also be committed to excellent and innovative teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, and are expected to contribute to departmental service. A PhD or equivalent is required. We welcome interdisciplinary candidates-including those working in neuroscience, biology, medicine, or related fields-whose research is grounded in engineering principles, methods, or technology development. We anticipate a start date of 9/1/27, but other dates are possible. Sponsorship for an H-1B visa may be available for qualified candidates, subject to institutional policies and applicable immigration regulations.

About the Department

Faculty in Northwestern BME are embedded across the University, with strong connections to other engineering departments within the McCormick School of Engineering and to clinical research in the Feinberg School of Medicine. These connections provide extensive opportunities for faculty to build collaborative, interdisciplinary, and translational research teams.

The department supports research across a broad range of biomedical engineering, including regenerative engineering, biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering, neural engineering, biomedical imaging, bioelectronics, synthetic biology, and related areas. BME faculty lead or participate in numerous collaborative research centers and institutes, including the the Querrey Simpson Institute for Regenerative Engineering (QSI RENU), the Center for Advanced Regenerative Engineering (CARE), the Querrey Simpson Institute for Translational Engineering for Advanced Medical Systems (QSI-TEAMS), the Center for Physical Genomics and Engineering (CPGE), the Center for Engineering in Vision and Ophthalmology (CEVO), the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics (QSIB), the Center for Genome Intelligence Engineering (GENIE) Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University (LCC), the Center for Synthetic Biology (CSB), and the Center for Innovation in Global Health Technologies (CIGHT). These programs, together with extensive collaborations across McCormick and Feinberg, provide rich opportunities for faculty working in both regenerative engineering and computational biomechanics, as well as across the broader field of biomedical engineering.

Compensation

The expected base pay range for this position at the Assistant Professor level is $133,000 - $143,000 and at the Associate Professor level is $145,000 - $158,000. This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation.

Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the University reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal competitors; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
