Job Description
Thomson Reuters is strengthening its Cyber Threat Management capability to help protect the organization, its products, and its customers from evolving cyber threats. The Lead Threat Detection & Threat Hunting Engineer will lead the design, development, tuning, and continuous improvement of advanced threat detection and proactive threat-hunting capabilities across the enterprise. You will build scalable detection logic, identify visibility and coverage gaps, operationalize threat intelligence, and improve the quality and effectiveness of security monitoring. This is a hands-on technical engineering role for someone who enjoys understanding adversary behaviour, analyzing complex security telemetry, proactively hunting for malicious activity, and translating emerging threats into practical detection strategies. You will work primarily with Splunk and Torq, supporting AWS and Azure cloud environments, while partnering with Security Operations, Threat Intelligence, Incident Response, Security Engineering, and cloud teams. This role is not a frontline SOC monitoring or incident response position. The primary focus is on building and improving detection content, conducting proactive hunts, identifying telemetry and tooling gaps, tuning alert logic, and engineering automation that enables SOC and Incident Response teams to respond more effectively. You will help shape the maturity and strategic direction of the Threat Detection and Threat Hunting program by developing high-quality detection content, improving coverage against known adversary techniques, reducing false positives, identifying gaps in visibility and telemetry, and ensuring detections remain effective as the threat landscape and enterprise environment evolve. You will also use AI-enabled security and automation tools responsibly to accelerate threat detection, hunting, research, telemetry analysis, documentation, and workflow development. You will apply sound technical judgment, validate outputs, and ensure that automated recommendations are appropriately reviewed before implementation or operational use. Key Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, implement, tune, and maintain scalable threat detection logic across Splunk, AWS, Azure, endpoint, identity, network, and other enterprise security data sources.
- Conduct proactive, hypothesis-driven threat hunts based on adversary tactics, threat intelligence, environmental changes, emerging threats, and known gaps in defensive coverage.
- Design and tune detection content to identify emerging threats, suspicious activity, adversary behaviors, and indicators of compromise while minimizing false positives, duplicate alerts, and alert fatigue.
- Use the MITRE ATT&CK framework to map detection coverage, identify detection and telemetry gaps, and prioritize improvements based on risk, threat relevance, and adversary activity.
- Identify gaps in logging, security telemetry, data quality, data normalization, enrichment, and tooling; partner with Security Engineering, Cloud Engineering, and platform teams to define and implement improvements.
- Operationalize threat intelligence, including indicators of compromise, tactics, techniques, procedures, behavioral indicators, and vendor intelligence, into actionable detection and threat-hunting strategies.
- Develop and optimize detection workflows, enrichment pipelines, correlation logic, and automation using Splunk, Torq, and other security technologies to improve alert context and analyst efficiency.
- Develop detection and hunting use cases for AWS and Azure environments, including cloud identity, IAM activity, control-plane events, workload activity, cloud-native security telemetry, and SaaS integrations.
- Use AI-enabled security tools responsibly to accelerate detection development, threat hunting, alert analysis, threat research, documentation, and hypothesis generation, while validating outputs before relying on them operationally.
- Evaluate and introduce new detection, hunting, analytics, automation, and AI-enabled security tools that improve detection coverage, visibility, workflow efficiency, or investigation context.
- Evaluate detection performance through analytics, testing, threat simulations, purple-team exercises, red-team findings, incident learnings, false-positive analysis, and operational metrics.
- Incorporate findings from incidents, threat hunts, vulnerability intelligence, vendor updates, adversary research, and changes to the technology environment into detection strategies and content improvements.
- Partner with Incident Response and Security Operations teams to validate detection quality, improve escalation criteria, ensure alerts contain actionable context, and address recurring detection gaps. This role supports those teams but is not responsible for primary incident ownership or alert queue monitoring.
- Develop and maintain clear documentation for detection logic, data sources, use cases, tuning decisions, investigation guidance, hunt procedures, coverage assessments, and known limitations.
- Establish and maintain detection engineering standards, including detection lifecycle processes, testing and validation requirements, content ownership, tuning practices, and detection-as-code practices where applicable.
- Mentor and support junior detection engineers and threat hunters by providing technical guidance, feedback, and development opportunities.
- Contribute to the strategic direction, operational maturity, and long-term roadmap of the Threat Detection and Threat Hunting program.
- Participate in cross-functional security initiatives, architecture and design reviews, cloud security discussions, and operational-readiness activities to ensure detection and monitoring requirements are considered early in the development lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in threat detection engineering, threat hunting, security analytics engineering, cyber defence, threat intelligence, or a related cybersecurity discipline.
- Demonstrated experience developing, tuning, validating, and maintaining detection logic across multiple security platforms, including SIEM, EDR, cloud-native security tools, or similar technologies.
- Strong hands-on experience with Splunk, including developing and tuning searches, correlation logic, dashboards, detections, or related security analytics content.
- Experience conducting proactive, hypothesis-driven threat hunts using endpoint, identity, network, cloud, application, and infrastructure telemetry.
- Strong experience analyzing security logs, telemetry, behavioural data, and event data from endpoint, identity, network, cloud, application, and infrastructure environments.
- Deep understanding of adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures, with the ability to translate threat intelligence into practical detection and threat-hunting use cases.
- Strong proficiency with the MITRE ATT&CK framework, including detection mapping, coverage analysis, and identification of defensive and telemetry gaps.
- Experience operationalizing threat intelligence, including indicators of compromise, behavioural indicators, adversary tradecraft, and threat research, into detection and monitoring workflows.
- Experience working with AWS and/or Azure security telemetry and developing cloud detection or threat-hunting use cases.
- Experience scripting or automating security workflows using Python, PowerShell, SPL, KQL, SQL, or comparable languages.
- Ability to develop and improve data enrichment, detection automation, alert triage, investigation context, and threat-hunting workflows.
- Experience identifying logging, telemetry, data-quality, enrichment, and tooling gaps and partnering with technical teams to resolve them.
- Ability to evaluate detection quality using testing, analytics, false-positive analysis, alert trends, incident findings, threat-hunting results, and coverage metrics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks, detection requirements, findings, and recommendations to a range of technical and business stakeholders.
- Demonstrated technical leadership skills, including experience mentoring team members or leading cross-functional security initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Torq or comparable SOAR, security automation, and orchestration platforms.
- Experience with cloud platforms and security services across AWS, Azure, GCP, or hybrid environments.
- Experience developing detection content for AWS and Azure, including cloud identity, IAM, audit logging, control-plane activity, workload telemetry, and cloud-native security services.
- Experience with SIEM, EDR, SOAR, XDR, cloud security, identity security, network security, or threat intelligence platforms.
- Experience conducting threat hunting, purple-team exercises, detection validation, adversary simulation, red-team detection analysis, or breach-and-attack simulation.
- Experience designing or maintaining detection-as-code workflows, detection engineering standards, content lifecycle processes, automated testing frameworks, or CI/CD pipelines for detection content.
- Experience integrating security data sources and developing enrichment pipelines for security analytics, detections, and threat hunting.
- Experience improving alert quality, investigation context, escalation workflows, and analyst response consistency.
- Familiarity with AI-enabled security operations, detection engineering, threat intelligence, threat-hunting, or investigation tools.
- Relevant security certifications such as GCIA, GCTI, GCED, GCIH, OSCP, AWS Security Specialty, Azure Security Engineer, or comparable certifications are beneficial but not required.
