The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provide dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

The ECU SoDM is seeking a part-time accomplished dental educator to support integration of the foundational biomedical sciences across the four-year predoctoral dental education program. The SoDM predoctoral biomedical science curriculum is multidisciplinary and includes both normal and abnormal functions of the human body with an emphasis on the oro-facial complex along with the scientific principles that underpin modern clinical dental practice. The dental faculty educator will actively participate in instruction and ensure that graduates are competent in the application of biomedical science knowledge in the delivery of patient care. The dental faculty educator will bring both clinical and biomedical science expertise to include one or more of the following scientific disciplines: general medicine, gross anatomy (including head and neck anatomy), molecular biology, neuroscience, general pathology, physiology, and/or pharmacology.

The position reports to the Chair of the Department of Foundational Sciences. Foundational Sciences is the home department at the SoDM for faculty in the areas of biological basic sciences, public health sciences, and behavioral sciences. The dental faculty educator will work closely with the Division Director of Basic Sciences and other faculty within the SoDM Department of Foundational Sciences. They will also work in close collaboration with SoDM clinical faculty from Departments of General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and Surgical Sciences. In addition, the dental faculty educator will work with faculty and staff in the Brody School of Medicine including the Department Chairs that are providing faculty instructors for the DMD curriculum.
