The English Department's Composition Program serves students from across UCI's schools and majors, offering classes that satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement and both the Lower Division (General Education 1a) and Upper Division Writing Requirements (General Education 1b). Our sequence of courses moves from foundations in rhetoric and argumentation into instruction focusing on critical reading and genre, writing with sources, research techniques, critical information literacy, and analytical metacognition, deepening rhetorical awareness along the way.

Composition's entry-level courses, Writing 40 and Writing 45, cultivate literate proficiencies across genres and media, and the GE courses, Writing 50 and Writing 60, deliver rigorous and interesting instruction in advanced writing, composing, and thinking strategies with an eye toward upper-division writing. All courses consider evidence-based inquiry within broad communication contexts that further rhetorical awareness of digital literacy and critical GenAI literacy as elements of information literacy. Our classes put before students interesting themes and substantive content that shape inquiry, fostering engagement, exploration, and discovery.
