About the Job

The on call position coordinator works collaboratively with full time coordinators and other on call coordinators from the Dept of Emergency Medicine through the Acute Care Research Coordinator Service Organization to enroll acutely ill patients in research studies.

These studies have protocols with restricted time windows for enrollments (less than 24 hours) from the sentinel event (such as a stroke, heart attack, head injury, surgery etc.).

The on call team member responds to Emergency Department or co-investigator requests to screen and enroll eligible patients.

The DEM at the University of Minnesota currently manages a growing portfolio of studies for a variety of departments: Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Cardiology and Critical Care research. On call Study coordinators provide research services to several hospitals as determined by the ACRC and the local hospital staff needs. They perform research tasks and responsibilities under the direction of a supervisor and Principal Investigator.

DEM Research team provides 24/7/365 study coordinator coverage for several hospitals in the Twin Cities metro area. To provide this coverage, a pool of U of M study coordinators share 12 hour call shifts (6A-6P or 6P-6A).

Ideal candidates will have experience with emergency or critical care, have an interest in gaining expertise in research in a unique environment and enjoys working with a team.

Detailed Job Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of each study protocol and departmental resources such as protocols & study documents.
  • Understand protocol(s) to effectively and appropriately enroll patients within study parameters
  • Complete sponsor's requirements for studies: (protocol training, data entry, etc.) in a timely manner.
  • Attain and maintain certification in study-specific assessments and protocols and named on Delegation of Authority log.
  • Proficient in consent process and documentation (including EFIC consent processes).
  • Accurately enter data for randomization process and Case Report Form entry.
  • Learn and access resources at each site to assist as needed (Emergency Department, Neurology, Surgery, pharmacy, Research Assistants, lab, nursing).
  • Occasional participation in telephone conferences or webinars.
  • Call can be taken outside the office as long as the study coordinator can respond promptly to a call (immediate call back to verify receipt, on site in 45 minutes).
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required:

  • Highschool diploma or Equvilent
  • A minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in emergency department, trauma or critical care in a hospital setting.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work independently when following research protocols.
  • Experience working with critically ill patients and their families.
  • Ability to obtain training certifications for at least 3 studies within 30 days of hiring date (human subjects research training, stroke assessment scale training, etc).
  • Excellent computer skills for accurate data collection using various hospital EMR systems (primarily EPIC systems) and willingness to learn various Data Capture systems (WebDCU, RAVE, Red-Cap)
  • Ability to work on site at various area hospital locations
  • Willingness to take calls for some might and weekend shifts

Preferred:

  • Graduation from an accredited four year university.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with at least two years of professional nursing experience in a clinical discipline related to the area of assignment and current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota or two years of professional clinical research experience, preferably in an academic health setting.
  • Research experience including a thorough understanding of HIPAA issues and consent process.
  • Experience with patient populations including: stroke, traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries, and/or other types of neurological emergencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills dealing with critically ill patients and their families.
  • Current CCRC certification or interest in attaining CCRC certification when eligible.
  • Experience with EPIC hospital record systems and research databases.
  • Physical and Environmental Conditions:
  • Mobility to work in a typical hospital setting.
  • Reliable transportation within the metro 24/7.
  • Strength and agility to lift up to 25 pounds of force frequently.
  • Standing, walking and/or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Some bending, twisting, stooping, and stretching.
  • Possible exposure to communicable disease and medical preparations in the hospital setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate immune status to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and hepatitis B.
  • Vision to read printed materials and VDT screens.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 - $40.00 per hour depending on education/qualifications/experience.
