Job Description

The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) is seeking a Neutron Depth Profiler to become an expert in all aspects of the neutron depth profiling program here at MURR. This position will report to the Neutron Scattering Group Leader.

This position will be the technical lead for the neutron depth profiling (NDP) instrument at the MU Research Reactor. They will provide support in the design and construction of the instrument and oversee all facets of the neutron depth profiling instrument, including sample analysis, safety analysis, student supervision, and manuscript preparation. Additionally, the technical lead is expected to take a lead role in grant writing endeavors that involve neutron depth profiling and to provide training and supervision for graduate and undergraduate students engaged in NDP projects.

Help build and run a world class program here in Mid-Missouri. You will have the autonomy to make decisions related to the operation schedule and availability of the neutron depth profiling instrument, such as experimental/operational settings, sample priority, data analysis methodology, etc. Get creative into troubleshooting experiments which may involve neutron beam alignment, radiation shielding, detector alignment, writing data analysis code/software, and interpreting complex data. Collaborate with faculty members within the MU School of Engineering and national laboratories such as Brook haven and Oak Ridge, etc. This is an exciting opportunity and we would hope you will consider joining us here at MURR!

Key Duties Performed by This Position Will Include

  • Prepare sample material for irradiation
  • Provide training resources, materials, and information to internal/external collaborators
  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals for external funding as well as help with manuscript preparation
  • Design, build, and maintain the Neutron Depth Profiling (NDP) instrument
  • Conduct and provide safety analysis of new experiments to determine feasibility and risk
  • Supervise student interns and postdocs interested in the neutron scattering industry

Monday through Friday 8AM - 5PM

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within neutron scattering or a research reactor within material science department.
  • Experience writing and managing grants with MURR scientists and external faculty
  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or Nuclear Engineering field.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000 per year

Grade: GGS-011
