The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world's largest scientific membership association, with a mission to "advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people".

ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society's programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise. The Division publishes 80+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high-quality products and services of benefit to the global community.

The Division has US-based facilities in Washington, D.C. and Columbus OH, as well as worldwide operations in a growing number of international locations under ACS International, Ltd. (ACSI) including but not limited to the UK, Singapore, China, and India.

Within the Publications Division, Global Technology Services (GTS) is tasked with providing all required technology support for the publishing activities of the ACS. The primary verticals in the GTS infrastructure include:

This position will reside within the Foundational & Technology Operations vertical and will report to the Senior Technology Manager.

Position Summary

As a Cloud Architect at ACS, a leading source of scientific information, you will be instrumental in implementing and managing cloud solutions. This role demands a profound understanding of cloud services, especially in Amazon Web Services (AWS), with GCP experience being a substantial advantage. Your expertise will be critical in the development and management of our cloud-based infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration and efficient operation across our extensive range of scientific and scholarly publications, national conferences, and other services.

Position Accountabilities



  • Minimum 8+ years of experience required for this position.
  • Design, implement, and manage cloud solutions in AWS, with GCP experience as an added advantage.
  • Take ownership of the provisioning of Cloud services and products. Develop and manage infrastructure automation focusing on scalability and security.
  • Work closely with software and AI engineer teams to meet project acceptance criteria, document requirements, support continuous integration and delivery, and mentor junior staff members in cloud technologies and best practices.
  • Design, develop, and manage dev, test, and production environments, ensuring robust software configuration management throughout the application development lifecycle.
  • Define and manage the roadmap for DevOps implementation in established operations, with expertise in continuous delivery, DevOps solutions, and integrated toolset solutions in an enterprise environment.
  • Implement DevSecOps practices, including secret management, privilege management, and integrating tools to enhance baseline security.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipeline, ensuring smooth deployments and integrations using GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, and containerization strategies.
  • Manage Kubernetes clusters within cloud environments, optimizing for performance and reliability.
  • Utilize Terraform and other Infrastructure as Code to automate and manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Work with serverless computing frameworks on both GCP and AWS to enhance application scalability and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile setting, utilizing Jira for task and project management.
  • Integrate and manage legacy workflows using Airflow, Jenkins, Bitbucket, and Bamboo pipelines.
  • Act as a tech owner of independent software products and aliasing with stakeholders.
  • Present Cloud solution and architecture to stakeholders
  • Take the ownership of cloud design and infrastructure operation.
  • Mentor junior DevOps engineers.


For this role, we are preferring candidates local to DC, but open to remote for the right candidate.

DC-based: This role is based in our Washington, D.C. office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between 140,000 & $189,000 per year.

Education
Bachelor of Science of Computer Engineering (preferred)
Experience
5 years: *Strong communication and leadership skills to effectively collaborate with various teams, lead cloud initiatives, and mentor junior staff.
*Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
*Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field. Advanced or professional certifications in Cloud are advantageous.

5 years: *Deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience with a broad range of DevOps tools. Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools, preferably Terraform. Expertise in tools like Ansible, Jenkins, Git, Maven, Docker, and Kubernetes.
*Expertise in compute clustering in AWS (GCP is a plus).
*Expertise in cloud serverless computing infrastructure on AWS (GCP is a plus).
*Proficiency in Terraform.
*Proficiency in Python or Java programming languages. (required)
7 years: *10 years overall hands-on experience in either infrastructure engineering, software engineering, or data engineering including at least 7 years of hands-on experience in architecting and building IT solutions in AWS (GCP is a plus).
*Proven experience in containerization, GitHub Actions, and ArgoCD.
*Experience with approaches and tooling for automated build, delivery, and release of software in Cloud.
*Experience in LLM and its applications preferred but not required.
