Job Description

Candidate will provide project management as well as technical engineering expertise in thermoforming equipment, materials, part design, process &/or tooling to drive beneficial solutions to our customers in a timely fashion while maintaining profitability to Amcor. Role will also act as a technical leader for the Amcor thermoforming R&D group, providing significant direction to the group (& organization) of the state of the art of various thermoforming manufacturing processes. Mentorship & best practice sharing will be common in this position as well as upward & outward visibility as a manufacturing process Subject Matter Expert (SME).

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

  • Use strong understanding of customer needs & internal technology capabilities to recommend, design, develop & implement products &/or processes aligned to our customers & the market needs as well as the Amcor business strategy
  • Represent the company's technical voice with internal stakeholders, customers & other industry experts
  • Stay apprised of externally relevant technology changes & trends that may impact Amcor & actively work toward applicable collaboration efforts
  • Drive Critical-To-Quality (CTQ) performance specifications into product design
  • Role may require consultations on projects outside of core technology area
  • Ability to have broad conceptual judgment for which there may be little precedence
  • Model significant technical problem solving skills & product development best practice methodologies for other engineers
  • Responsible for leading significant projects & programs through a stage gated, product development process
  • Plan, oversee & analyze production trials utilizing Design of Experiment (DOE), Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) &/or statistical analysis methodologies
  • Ensure work is properly documented & contribute to overall technical knowledge library
  • Protect Amcor Intellectual Property (IP) while meeting stakeholder needs with appropriate information sharing
  • Leverage deep understanding of polymeric material / property relationships & significant thermoforming process capability knowledge in order to meet customer needs
  • Continuously learn & share knowledge in order to advance capabilities across the global organization
  • Lead advanced technical process development / improvement initiatives in order to generate new value to Amcor
  • Actively participate with a globally connected technical community for information sharing relevant to assigned area
  • Collaborate with areas such as corporate engineering, operations & quality to lead resolution of a variety of technical challenges in support of sustained solutions. This may include machine installations, initiating vendor programs & participating on new capital project teams.
  • Both create & solicit from others, new, viable program ideas to contribute to filling the product development pipeline
  • Actively puts safety first in all responsibilities promoting Amcor's strong safety culture

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • BS in chemical engineering, polymer engineering, materials science, polymer science/physics preferred
  • BS in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering will also be considered
  • 10 - 20 years strong thermoforming technical / engineering experience preferred
  • Ideal candidate has significant engineering experience in the development &/or production of thin gauge, thermoformed, multilayer, packaging products for the food, consumer or healthcare industry. While a strong candidate will be considered a subject matter expert in at least one of these areas, candidates with a combination of only some of the experiences above will be considered as long as they have a working knowledge of most.
  • Prefer engineering experience to have been in an R&D, product development, process, tooling or manufacturing engineering role
  • At least 5 years of high visibility technical leadership would be a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of multiple plastic thermoforming processes, applicable tooling & industrial thermoforming equipment is desired
  • Packaging product design & thermoforming process engineering experience considered valuable
  • Significant experience working directly with end customers building relationships & understanding product requirements is desired
  • Experience leading large product & process development projects from a project management standpoint with demonstrated, sustained results
  • Demonstration of the ability to obtain & synthesize information from a wide range of inputs & quickly apply it to a project to achieve business results

% Breakdown of Role's Responsibilities

  • 40% Research & product development of thermoformed products (Research, problem solving, testing, meetings, project management, obtaining quotes, etc.)
  • 20% General R&D / technology / program advanced development activities
  • 15% Attending manufacturing / customer trials (% travel varies)
  • 15% Technical mentoring, best practice sharing,
  • 10% Interfacing with customers / sales team, attending trade shows
